Press Contact: TERESA SCHILLER, ESQ., WBASNY Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York Submits Statement to President and Senate In Support of Confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor July 8, 2009. New York, NY. The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY), on behalf of its 3,800+ members from across the state, has issued a detailed statement urging the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor - - a WBASNY member - - to the United States Supreme Court. The statement reviews and highlights selected decisions issued by Judge Sotomayor in her more than 16 years on the federal bench. In support of the nomination, WBASNY cites not only Judge Sotomayor’s credentials as a prosecutor and corporate litigator, but also her extensive experience as a judge. Quoting both her colleagues on the Second Circuit as well as United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and former United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, WBASNY praises Judge Sotomayor’s passion for moderation, common-sense perspective, and understanding of particular difficulties faced by women, children and the disabled in our society. “Judge Sotomayor’s jurisprudence defies easy categorization,” stated Cynthia Schrock Seeley. “That is a positive attribute. Based on a review of her published decisions, we have found that Judge Sotomayor has demonstrated careful consideration of the law and facts before her in each case, rather than a predilection toward any particular political or philosophical position.”“We are proud that Judge Sotomayor is a member of WBASNY, but that was only one of many factors in our association’s decision to support her nomination,” continued Schrock Seeley. “This statement is the result of careful analysis of her decisional legacy, together with her unquestionable academic qualifications, background and experience. We believe that Judge Sotomayor will bring a beneficial perspective to the United States Supreme Court and we welcome the appointment of another woman to the Court.” WBASNY’s statement has been transmitted to President Obama and members of the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. WBASNY has requested the opportunity to testify before the Senate during confirmation hearings on Judge Sotomayor’s nomination. *A copy of WBASNY’s statement in support of Judge Sonia Sotomayor is available at
